Bottles of Hope July Challenge

This month is our guild's annual charity challenge and we chose "Bottles of Hope" as our theme.

According to bottlesofhope.org, Bottles of Hope are small glass bottles covered with polymer clay and given to cancer patients. They symbolize a wish and a hope for health. This project was started in 1999 by a Rhode Island cancer survivor and has spread internationally. Bottles are made by artists, students, survivors, seniors and many more who volunteer their time and love.

Some of these little spirit lifters created by PCAGOE members will be donated to someone they know and others will be going to lift the spirits of a stranger.

Vote and Win!
Three lucky winners will be selected in a drawing of all non-member voters and will be able to choose a prize offered by our member shops sponsoring this month's challenge. See the list of participating sponsors and prizes.

And the entries are:

1. Lapis Bottle of Hope by Susan of 11BOLDstreet
For the PCAGOE July Challenge, we are creating Bottles of Hope for cancer victims. I covered a deep blue glass bottle with a custom faux lapis lazuli mix, sanded and buffed it, then added a silver plated wire wrap collar.

2. Lavender Hope by Lisa of HiGirls
Created this for my friend Janet. Lavender is her favorite, so I included a variety of shades and added a little mica pearl for a nice sheen.

3. Ocean Waves by Lisa of HiGirls
Created for my friend Beth who loves the seashore.

4. Hope Full Bottle by Beth of CreateMyWorld
My concept for this Bottle of Hope was based upon the desire to give a bottle that illustrates being filled with love and hope, not empty. But how to decorate the outside of the bottle to allow for the hope inside to show through? This problem was solved by covering part of the bottle with translucent liquid polymer with inclusions of embossing powder, to create a translucent but colored layer. Part of the bottle was left naked, in the shape of a heart on 2 opposing sides, to create a window to see the inside clearly. The spiral lentil on the top of the lid is attached securely to the lid with a screw. And the "hope" that is inside consists of many tiny polymer hearts and spirals in glittery white. It was my original intention that the owner could make a wish on each heart and spiral, or share the tiny tokens with anyone she wants to give a little love or hope. The bottle is tiny, measuring in at 3" tall and about 1" wide at the widest point, the hearts and spirals inside the bottle are about 1/4" wide and 1/4" long. More views of this bottle can be found in my flickr photostream at: www.flickr.com/photos/createmyworlddesigns

5. Filled with Hope by Beth of CreateMyWorld
Part of the bottle was left naked to create a window to see the inside clearly. The heart on the top of the lid is embossed on both sides with the word hope and is attached securely to the lid with a screw. And the "hope" that is inside consists of many tiny polymer hearts of gold, one sapphire blue and one burgundy heart (to match the colors on the exterior). It was my original intention that the owner could make a wish on each heart, or share the tiny hearts with anyone she wants to give a little love. The bottle is tiny, measuring in at 3" tall and about 1" wide, the hearts inside the bottle are about 1/4" wide at the widest point and 1/4" long. More views of this bottle can be found in my Flickr photostream at: www.flickr.com/photos/createmyworlddesigns

6. Bottle of Hope for Robbi by Susan of LadyFlowersbySusan
I made this Bottle of Hope to honor my friend Robbi, who was diagnosed with breast cancer 23 years ago. She is a triumphant survivor who has encouraged dozens of other breast cancer patients.
I made this Bottle of Hope to honor her courage in facing chemo and, later, a bone marrow transplant.
Once given a 15% chance of five year survival, is radiantly healthy and serves others battling this disease. I covered an old pharmacy bottle I got in an antique store. The stopper came from another bottle. I covered the bottle with pink "Blush" clay and overlaid the blush with paper thin slices of a translucent Chrysanthemum cane.

7. Blue Bird of Hope by Marie of YoungCreative
I sculpted this free-spirited blue bird over a tiny bottle. His little belly shares a message of "hope." I'm donating it to a dear Franciscan Friar who works with me at Saint Francis University in Loretto. He is a wonderful soul who has spent the past two summers cycling more than 400 miles to raise money for our Dorthy Day Center. He expected to be doing the same this summer but is undergoing cancer treatments instead. His spirit is strong and he hope to be back on his bike soon.

8. Bottle of Hope-Lyette-1 by Line of PlaySculptLive
Made for the Bottle of Hope Challenge for the PCAGOE, this bottle is donated to a yogini friend of mine who's courage is inspirational. NAMASTE

9. Purple Flowers of Hope by Arlene of Ashpaints
This Bottle of Hope features purple and white flower canes and multi-colored green leaves. It is topped with decorative trim and a flat-top stopper.

10. Aqua and Purple Swirls Bottle of Hope by Arlene of Ashpaints
The bottle itself is covered with variegated shades from a rich purple to a beautiful soft aqua. The bottle is trimmed with a decorative strip and topped with a ball stopper covered with curls and strips of clay.

11. Flower Garden Bottle of Hope by Arlene of Ashpaints
This Bottle of Hope started its life as a tiny bud vase. It is covered with a soft green textured clay. In each of the thumbprint indents, an oval of the same clay but with yellow flowers and leaves was added, then finished off with curls of clay. The stopper is a small ball shape covered with more curls of clay.

June Challenge -- Elements

For this month's challenge our artists had fun interpreting the theme "Elements-Earth, Wind, Fire, Water." They could experiment with one or all four elements as long as the entry contained 50% polymer clay. Take a look at the unique creations!

Vote and Win!
Three lucky winners will be selected in a drawing of all non-member voters and will be able to choose a prize offered by our member shops sponsoring this month's challenge. See the list of participating sponsors and prizes.
And the entries are:

1. Fire Choker No. 159 by Susan of 11BOLDstreet
For the PCAGOE Elements Challenge, I chose "fire." Mixed mokume gane techniques produced the texture and movement, while warm bold reds, yellows and oranges suggest tongues of fire. Copper was the metal of choice to complete this dramatic neckpiece.

2. Earth Walk Pendant by Els of Beadelz
I made some very nice mud colors with a very earthy look. I wanted to combine them and add something extra to it, the structure of trees you see when you fly over a forest. The shape had to be simple, round, like the Earth. That's how I came up with this pendant.

3. Hearts on Fire Switch Plate by Marie of YoungCreative
I created this plate using blends of translucent,  metallic, and opaque polymer clay with some alcohol ink and mica powder accents. The orange is created using paprika in translucent clay and the green has flecks of parsley. Each piece is hand-cut and pieced together in a mosaic-style pattern.

4. Touch of Flame by Freda of FredaK
This reminded me of a flame.

5.  Lily Pond Switch Plate by Marcia of marcympc
A blue and green modern switch plate with a mokume gane pattern evocative of a lily pond. Calming, cool and restful.

6.  Airflow Teapot by Lisa of HiGirls
Working completely with white clay, I explored movement and flow on this teapot. I've wanted to try covering a teapot for quite a while, and when I found this cute one at a thrift store, I knew it had to become a challenge piece.

7.  Balance is in the Wind by Line of PlaySculptLive
This image came to me in a daydream. Using an lamp bulb as a base, the earth was created then the fire fingers are just holding her. I wrapped wire around the piece with the charm entitled "Balance" because our earth can survive or be consumed depending on the winds. The balance is in the Wind.

8. Dancing Flames Soap or Lotion Dispenser by Arlene of Ashpaints
I love to sit and watch the flames in a fire pit or fireplace and this design is my interpretation of how those flames dance and spin. Each spiral begins with a thin extruded "snake" in variegated shades from golden yellow to rich red. The "snakes" are painstakingly formed into the tight coil in the middle and continues to follow the contours of the spiral. Lines in alternating rows adds texture. The design wraps all the way around the dispenser including on the bottom.

9. Flaming Embers Necklace by Beth of CreateMyWorld
This pendant was created by painting the colors in ink on 2 pieces of translucent clay and locking the color on the inside of the 2 pieces. The strip was then shaped in an organic ribbon type form. The "embers" streaming out of the top of the flame were created by coating beadalon cable wire with liquid polymer. The pendant is hung asymmetrically from a strand of clear glass beads with single red and orange glass beads interspersed to add to the look of flying embers of a flame. For more views of this piece, please visit my flickr photostream at: www.flickr.com/photos/createmyworlddesigns

10. Earth Woman by Jill of Jkollmann
The shaped base for this focal is from Helen Breil's "Shapes" with a Skinner Blend, embellished with the female face and vines with leaves. It is 2 1/4 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches at the widest.

11. Fire-hot Pepper (and Salt) by Cindy of ArrowdaleArtStudio
Simply covered salt and pepper shakers with a tri-color skinner blend of red to orange to yellow.

-Nice job as always... so hard to choose a favorite
-Gorgeous entries, it was hard to choose favourites!
-There should have been eleven winners this month!! Every entry is so beautiful.
-Beth's peacock platter is amazing. The amount of work and talent that went into it is astounding.
nice work everyone
-That tray is absolutely stupendous. Love it. The patchwork is so incredibly appealing. Well done everyone
-Beautiful entries! So much color and texture and we're spoiled for choice!
-Each piece is prize worthy.
-So many lovely pieces to choose from it was hard to decide. They ALL deserve to be winners.
-Love all the entries! Hard to pick just 3 out of 10, let alone 1st, 2nd, 3rd!
-My personal interpretation of mosaics and a love of peacocks influenced my 1st place selection but all the works of art entered this month are all beautiful.
-WOW This one is really hard to pick just three that are the best. I think they are all the best. Good work to all of you.
-Hard to chose only 3!
-Wow! Everything looks amazing!
-It was very difficult to chose this time. So many outstanding pieces. Good luck to everyone.
-I just have to say that these are all great entries! Beautiful work!
-Wow, ladies you have done it again. Nice work all. Beth the tray was fabulous, with bright colors and neat design. Phoenix: really nice work, and Arlene Your mosaics are always spectacular...didn't know where to look first. Lots of good work, I enjoyed each piece
-That peacock tray is incredible! The amount of time and effort is just WOW!
Nice work on all entries! It was difficult to pick a favorite. I love colorful so I picked #5 for my vote.

-The best theme yet, my top three are really all joint first place .
